Ceramic Tile

Relief Sculpture Tile

During a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago, I fell in love with the terra cotta Spandrel Panel from the Rosenfeld Building by Adler and Sullivan, in the Architecture Hall. I mimicked the design in a small relief sculpture tile using a local red high fire clay. I applied a layer of iron ixode and the tile was then salt fired in a reduction kiln.

Tiles with Mishima technique

I used colorful underglazes and black and white clay slip to create surface designs. The Mishima technique allows for layers of color. The first layer of clay, either left raw or with a color applied, is covered with wax before carving the design, and then a new color is applied to the carving.
